Hartford trip cancelled

Hi Everyone

This post is for those who have already indicated that they would be attending Hartford Marina on 29th August and for those who do intend coming along but have not let me know!

We have had discussions with Hartford Marina and they have informed us that due to the fact some of their boats are moored in the vicinity they have reserved for us, we will have to moor up stern first, as there are no pontoons. Also, it is extremely muddy and a long walk to the 'local'. Use of a dinghy will be very restricted, especially in the dark. It would be very difficult for some people to get on and off their boats and a big problem for those with dogs.

In the circumstances we do feel that changes to the set plan are required and would suggest that those intending going to Hemmingford Beer Festival on Friday 28th, stay put there for the weekend, unless they wish to move on to another venue.

We are sorry to come to this decision but feel it is far more sensible for you to moor up where you feel safe and happy.

When I return from my week in Sussex I will let you know the details of the Bowling in Ely.

Regards

Janette

Hi Everybody

AUGUST 22ND - BBQ DISCO/KARAOKE

We are holding this event at the Chalet Bar on the above date. The BBQ will be lit at 6.30 pm (bring your own food and drink)

The disco/karaoke will be presented by Mike Webber.

There is no need for advance booking for this function.

AUGUST BANK HOLIDAY 29TH - 31ST

As you know from the directory we are planning a trip to Hartford Marina for this bank holiday including a dinghy trip in the back waters and plan to meet on 29th at the venue. The Marina have reserved an area for us and we can socialise and BBQ. For those wanting to eat out there is the facility of the pub, where you can walk or boat to.

On this same weekend (28th, 29th & 30th) we also learn that there is a beer festival at The Cock in Hemingford Grey. Apparently there is music every night and a BBQ. They also have marquees in case the weather is not too good. Several members have indicated they might like to attend this, which would mean mooring at Hemingford or St Ives and walking to the venue or taking a taxi or mini bus from Hartford. It is of course a bank holiday and whilst the moorings have been reserved at Hartford, it may be a struggle to moor up at Hemingford or St. Ives.

As we have to let Hartford Marina know approx how many boats they will be accommodating perhaps you could either email or telephone me if you are coming, prior to 24th August.

Regards

Janette

JULY 09 NEWSLETTER

COMMODORES WELCOME
We had an excellent turnout of members to welcome Peter as our new Commodore along with Dianne his lovely wife.
The weather was a bit breezy as we tried to erect the marquee on Friday afternoon, which made it a bit interesting, but a big thank you goes to everyone who helped and put out the chairs and tables too. We were expecting almost 80 people and we were hoping that in the event of rain everyone would be able to get inside, but again we were lucky and Saturday was fine but very cold.
Dianne prepared an excellent buffet and Steve and Liz Mead did the honours by providing the disco and karaoke.
The Commodore himself won the bonus ball and we had a raffle, thanks go to Lia and Dianne for selling the tickets and everyone who brought prizes.
Peter unfortunately had almost lost his voice, so our Vice Commodore Julie stepped in to say a few words, she thanked everyone for coming and hoped they were all enjoying themselves, she also mentioned the up coming Regatta and the theme of the Oscars this year.
Everyone seemed to be enjoy themselves and it was another late night for some as they adjourned to the Chalet bar, to carry on partying.

UPWARE/BURWELL WEEKEND
We had an amazing turnout, with 18 boats making the trip to the Five Miles from Anywhere Public House at Upware, it was very busy but we managed to moor three abreast outside the pub and some boats were able to moor alongside on the grassy bank.
It was lovely to see Sally and Jed Love who are now based on the Thames but came to stay with Lynda and David Fensome for the weekend, Dee and Bern Philpott who were on their way across to Boston for the season, and Kath and Ray Manson who are now based at CMBC but made the trip down on Sunday to Burwell with us.

Saturday was a beautiful day and there was lots of activity on the river, some of those who had traveled up on Friday went for a trip in their dinghies to Wicken Fen to have a spot of lunch in the Café there.
Apparently they were told off by the EA warden for coming too far down the lode, he let the dogs and the ladies off but told the gents to take the dinghies to the GOBA moorings and walk back. Oh dear!!

Thirty-nine of us sat down to dinner on Saturday evening and were entertained afterwards by a singer/comedian in the bar who was very funny.
Sunday morning dawned another lovely day without a cloud in the sky, very different from the last two years, thank goodness. There were nineteen of us for breakfast in the pub, which was excellent, and then the dinghies were launched.

We proceeded to the lock and all managed to get in, or so we thought, it was only when we got out the other side we realized we had left the Commodore behind. A couple of dinghies stayed behind to wait for him while the rest of us started on the 4-mile trip down Burwell lode. We tried to stay together as much as possible because of the swans, we weren’t quite sure what they would make of so much activity especially if they were nesting or protecting their young. Some of us came equipped with large umbrella’s, which fortunately we didn’t need to use, others did get attacked though, which is quite frightening.

After about an hour we all reached the pub hot and thirsty and ready for a welcome pint, it really was a scorching day. The pub had lit the barbecue and proceeded to cook burgers and sausages, they seemed a bit disorganized but I think all of us were fed eventually.
We made the return trip without mishap and arrived back at the Five Miles to be greeted with more entertainment in the form of a live group in the gardens. We relaxed on our boats soaking up the sunshine.
Sunday evening some of us ate in the pub and listened to the entertainment that they had on outside.
Monday most of us departed for our respective marinas while a lucky few were enjoying a few more days’ holiday.

REGATTA
The weather did its best to dampen the Regatta weekend, which unfortunately had to be curtailed on Sunday because of heavy rain, but the PEBC members are a hardy bunch and still managed to enjoy themselves.

It was Vice Commodore Julie’s job to organize the Regatta and she did an excellent job with the help of the Committee of course and some of our lovely members who also gave a hand to help erect and decorate marquees.

The Commodores cocktail party on the Friday evening was a chance to all dress up and socialize, it was lovely to see Mike and Wendy Sheppard, Commodore and his lady from UBC who came along with Stuart and Karen and Terry and Jane also from UBC.
Members were greeted with a free drink and thanks go to Dianne who provided us with the finger buffet.
We were then entertained by PEBC member and fabulous singer Lia and her 8-piece band who are all very talented musicians. Lia’s Dad Colin also a club member and an excellent singer himself then got up and performed for us, the evening continued with a disco by Steve, Jack and Steve, thanks to you all for the great entertainment, it was just such a pity that the evening was so cold, someone jokingly said we’ll have to move the Regatta to the South of France next year to guarantee lovely warm weather.

Saturday was overcast and chilly but a least it didn’t rain, we played our usual games starting with the Ladies Fender throwing always a good spectator sport.
Wendy Sheppard from UBC was hoping to retain her title, which she had won for the last two years, but our own Lynda Fensome managed an almighty throw to bring the cup back to the PEBC well done Lynda.
The Men’s fender throw was hotly contested as always but champion thrower Steve Mead retained his title.
We had a special Splash down award for fender throwing this year, as Jack Howard was the only person who managed to throw a fender in the river.
Dinghy net a ball drew a crowd to watch the antics on the river as teams of two tried to grab as many balls as possible in a NET, mind you I think some cheating went on but the eventual winner was declared Latest Flame.
The Adult dinghy-rowing race was won by Stuart on Voltiguer from UBC, so they will have a title to contest next year.
The Children’s dingy rowing race was won by Lauren Jones by default as she was the only entrant, come on kids start practicing for next year.
The Adult dinghy handling with engine was won by Juno Delphinius, well done Mark and Lorraine, we know how you spend your weekends.
The Dog handling always a crowd pleaser was this year won by Richard Warren with Sochie, runner up was Haley Richards with Nellie. Well done to both of you and your four legged friends.

Saturday evening was time to dress up in your fancy dress costume and enter the world of Oscar. Julie and her helpers had done a fantastic job of decorating the marquees with the Oscar/Hollywood theme and lots of people entered into the spirit by dressing up as their favorite, Star or film character.
The Hog roast was served and then we were entertained by another of our talented members Eric Eve with his Buddy Holly Tribute, Steve, Steve & Jack again provided the disco and the partying went on well into the night.
The fancy dress winners were Debbie Kiddie dressed as Cleopatra for the ladies
Richard Warren for the gents dressed as Gandhi, and Lauren Jones for the Children dressed as an Abba singer, they were all presented with theirs Oscars by Julie.

Sunday after some had breakfasted in the Pike and Eel, it was decided because of the inclement weather to bring forward the Prize giving to 1 o’clock.
The only event we could hold was the Pitching which was done in the marquee.
Dorothy Goodhew won for the ladies, Peter Mead for the men, and Lauren Jones for the children.
It was such a shame that the It’s a knockout had to be abandoned along with the beat the goalie, but it was just too wet.
Thanks to everyone who attended and made it such a good weekend despite the weather. Lets just hope that next year is brighter and warmer.

Peter presented the Prizes to all our winners, a full list of which is printed at the end of the newsletter.
